This summer the City of Coralville hosted six WLC high school interns across four city departments. The Coralville Fire Department hosted two firefighter student practicum students; the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts hosted a technical assistant intern and a costume intern; the Wastewater Department hosted a wastewater intern; and Coralville Municipal Water hosted a water plant intern.
Cities and counties always have jobs to fill, from community service/protection roles to water plant treatment jobs to conservation roles and everything in between. Students don’t often know about the wide variety of city and county jobs available. Bringing in high school interns is a great early introduction to local city careers and a great way to keep students local.
“We are so thrilled with Coralville’s involvement,” says WLC Director Kristine Bullock. “We often hear our county and city government partners say they would like more students to know about city and county career opportunities, so we are so excited to see Coralville put those words into action.”
Jordan Altenhofen, water superintendent at Coralville Municipal Water, hosted one of the interns. “I think it is important for the Coralville Water Department (and all city departments) to host high school interns and try to engage the public as much as possible. The internship experience allows a student to ‘peek behind the curtain’ and see what water utility operations look like, and potentially opens their minds to the various career paths that are available that most likely weren’t being considered.
“I would recommend other city and county departments partner with WLC,” he continues. “Hosting a high school internship is one of the most successful ways to get fresh new minds into an industry, especially industries that you typically don’t see being talked about in the high schools.”
The internship experiences are also incredibly valuable for the students. Aster Cox, a City High School student, said this about her WLC internship with the Coralville Fire Department: “This internship has been a great opportunity to gain insight into the career I wish to pursue in the future. The kind and enthusiastic people at my internship site have been paramount in helping shape my experience. I’ve learned new skills related to firefighting and running calls with the fire department.”
Ledford Engineering hosted three interns for us this summer, helping these students explore careers in mechanical engineering. Ledford also hosted a job shadow last spring and regularly participates in our mock interview and classroom speaker events. We are so grateful for their partnership.
“Ledford Engineering has enjoyed partnering with Workplace Learning Connection to provide learning experiences for students,” says Mel Nanke, Ledford project manager. “This summer Ledford was able to host three students to complete a design project, from requirement formation, concepting, design, design review, creating engineering drawings, and ordering materials. Helping students discover their passions and develop skills for the future has been incredibly rewarding.”
