Selecting an Apprentice

Many different individuals qualify. When recruiting, be sure to emphasize in the job description “apprentice” or “in training” or “train to be” to encourage unskilled individuals and industry changers to apply.

Here are some examples of how you could select an apprentice:

  • Select a new apprentice employee through your normal recruitment efforts
  • Select a current employee or have current employees apply
  • Promote through Kirkwood efforts and select from an application Kirkwood sends to you.

Business Commitment to the Apprentice

  • Hire the apprentice as a full-time employee
  • Pay for the registered apprenticeship program
  • Ensure the apprentice is not scheduled for work during class
  • Determine wage growth milestones
  • Arrange for an experienced mentor that will provide on the job training and support as needed
  • Provide documentation on competencies and hours
